Samsung EVO Plus Review: How good is the microSD card with 1 TB storage?

In addition to the faster PRO Plus, Samsung also offers a cheaper microSD card with up to 1 terabyte of storage space. While the PRO model is primarily aimed at action cams, drones and cameras, the Samsung EVO Plus is a real all-rounder and achieves a transfer speed of up to 160 MB/s. Our test.

Unlike the PRO Plus, the Samsung EVO Plus does not come with a USB-A adapter. Instead, it comes with an SD card adapter that allows the card to be used with standard SD card readers. This is very practical, as many notebooks or cameras offer a (large) SD card slot.

While the PRO Plus is blue with white lettering, the EVO Plus is white with blue lettering. Visually, of course, the two microSD cards hardly differ from each other.

Otherwise, there are no significant differences between the Samsung EVO Plus and PRO Plus in terms of design and workmanship.

In contrast to the PRO Plus, Samsung only specifies the maximum read speed of the EVO Plus. At up to 160 MB/s, this is slightly below the PRO model, which achieves up to 180 megabytes per second. The write speed, on the other hand, is only said to be “lower than the read speed”.

Of course, the speed depends heavily on the device and/or card reader used. According to the manufacturer, the performance data of the U3 / Class 10 microSD card reaches its maximum performance with Samsung readers in particular. In order to really be able to exploit the maximum speed, you need an appropriate device that actually enables these speeds.

I was unable to achieve the specified values with both my card reader and my SD card slot on the notebook, but with the help of the PRO Plus USB adapter, the EVO model also produced very good speeds.

It can therefore be assumed that the Samsung EVO Plus will also achieve the specified speeds. This of course makes it a convincing all-rounder that is not only suitable for smartphones or tablets, but also cuts a fine figure for photographers in cameras or in gaming handhelds.

Samsung does not promise too much in terms of speed. The Samsung EVO Plus ranks slightly below the Samsung PRO Plus in the SD card reader. Very slightly, but this is also due to the fact that my card reader cannot call up the full speed. The EVO model is even slightly ahead in terms of sequential write speed.

Things get interesting in combination with the USB adapter. Here, the card can of course use the entire bandwidth of the USB-A port and thus achieve its maximum values. With 170.09 MB/s for sequential reading, the microSD card even exceeds the manufacturer’s specification and also achieves a very good write performance of 128.56 MB/s.

This means that it is only slightly below the PRO model and is the better choice for most requirements, especially in view of the significantly lower price. Even for professional photographers, action cams and drones, the price-performance ratio clearly speaks in favor of the EVO Plus.

The PRO Plus is also available in capacities of 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 terabyte. The largest variant offers space for 47.1 hours of 4K videos or 427,708 4K photos.

The Samsung EVO Plus is also an excellent, robust and durable microSD card that defies almost all adversities. The sequential read and write speed is slightly below that of the Samsung PRO Plus, but thanks to the UHS-I standard, it is still fast enough to be suitable for professional applications.

The benchmark tests show that the microSD card lives up to the manufacturer’s specifications. The price is of course interesting, because in contrast to the PRO Plus, the EVO Plus has now dropped significantly in price, which earns it additional points in terms of the price-performance ratio.

Anyone looking for a fast and reliable microSD card with generous memory is guaranteed to be happy with the Samsung EVO Plus.
